Planning your wedding can be overwhelming and stressful, just rearranging the table plan time and time again can send you stir crazy. I sometimes believe this was the entire reason for the idea of a honeymoon- relax after a year of hard-core wedding planning!
Not only is it the perfect way to start married life, but it’s that post-wedding break, the chance to finally sit back and relax after a year of planning the big event. A time to take in everything you created, the people who were with you, and the memories you will cherish.
My new husband and I had still not planned our honeymoon after the wedding. We just had no idea where we wanted to go. Usually we enjoy something active, adventurous and fun, but instead we opted for the traditional relaxed holiday in the Maldives.
This was one of the best holidays we had both ever had.
We stayed at the Shangri-La Maldives resort on the Island of Gan. When we arrived at the resort, we were treated to a refreshing coconut cocktail and taken on a tour around the island while our room was being arranged.
We were driven through the most beautiful forest of palm trees and white sands, it was total paradise. I have to admit, the Maldives is one place that looks exactly like its pictures and postcards, and you have to pinch yourself to believe it’s real!
Our room was utterly breath-taking. Sitting on the back of the buggy we were driven off the island, up a wooden ramp that panned out onto the crystal clear waters where our own private villa was standing.
Entering the room, we had a free standing marble bathtub at one end, and the master bedroom at the other that looked out onto the island and the sea. Our balcony gave us stairs directly into the ocean where we could swim and snorkel all day. It was just unbelievable, I cannot even put into words how gorgeous it was.
Now if you are one, like my husband, who is not a massive fan of the heat, the Maldives is perfect. The air was clear and clean, there was no humidity, it was the ideal sunbathing weather! Not once did he complain!
Anytime the sun gained momentum on our skin, we would take a refreshing dip in the bluest ocean that you can imagine. We sat there all day, everyday, taking in the dream of our surroundings, ordering room service and cocktails to our water villa, while watching the schools of fish pass by our deck!
To stop us getting bored there were so many fun activities ranging from snorkelling, diving, dolphin watching, island tours, jet skiing, banana boating, underwater jet engines and more!
Next, the food is to die for! Everything is freshly prepared and succulent. Our favourite place was Dr Ali’s which hosted Chinese and Arabian food where we could order a mezzanine of platters; each dish was unique, creative and incredibly delicious. My husband and I both agreed, it was actually the best Chinese we had ever had.
The Shangri-La service does not disappoint. Even though the Maldives was your typical honeymoon destination, it is one place I would highly recommend. It is a must see location in an untouched land of luxury and paradise. We are planning to return again next year for another round of relaxation.
