The super stylish real wedding of fashion blogger Roshini Daswani to Raj Kewalram recently took place in stunning Abu Dhabi at the Ritz Carlton – Grand Canal Hotel and was a pure royal Arabian themed affair. This wedding consisted of six days of events including the Mehendi, Welcome Dinner and Rave, Ghari and Accha Sathiyaro, Sangeet, Wedding, and Reception.
How They Met
Raj and I met at his house party in December 2009 during our second year in university. The following months we bumped into each other a couple of times at different occasions, we always had some chemistry and loved a little banter with good chat, but nothing really happened till he moved into the same halls of residence as me in September 2010. To this date Raj would deny it but he was texting me a lot right before moving in to halls, I could sense he was interested, and trying to charm his way into my life.
London played the biggest role in our relationship since we met and fell for each other in such a beautiful city; we have a strong attachment to the place. I would say it’s because we both grew and found ourselves here. There are too many unforgettable memories with him and thinking about them all is like going through my favourite iTunes playlist, every moment has a track behind it and just brings back a smile, I never want this playlist to end.
Choosing A Location
For many of our guests this was the first time visiting the Middle East, so we wanted to ensure that our wedding reflected and delivered as much of a Middle Eastern cultural experience as possible, as well as being a reflection of us and what we love. This naturally helped give clarity and influence everything from the design of the cards, to the themes, to the food, decor, order of events, budgeting etc… Having a clear vision of what we wanted the end to look like really helped in developing the framework to start the planning of a wedding, and once we could communicate that vision back to the planners, they in turn helped us in developing the budget that could meet our requirements.
My husband and I were long distance and based in different countries during the entire planning process; and our wedding (along with the planner) was also in a third country, so we definitely found communicating ideas and decision making to be very challenging and time consuming. This also meant we had to travel a lot for the wedding planning (almost a trip a month in the last 5 months), not only for the wedding shopping and cards etc… But to also dedicate time to each other as we tend to get through work much faster in person. Not having your partner available whenever you need them, along with balancing family expectations on both sides, did lead to a lot of frustrating rainy days. We quickly learned that dividing areas of work based on our strengths and interests, and taking decisions in these areas with the planner independently helped in getting the bulk of the work done.
In addition having a strong planner that is capable of multi-tasking between us and pulling the work together while keeping a strict schedule greatly helped us stay on track, keep active, and maintain open lines of communication between the three of us. The key was to keep talking to my husband as much as I could, trust each other’s judgement, and delegate work to family members.
The Bride & Groom
The past 5 years have been an incredible journey. I think we are so lucky to have gotten the chance to experience life together and I wouldn’t trade them for anything. We have been through the storm thick and thin, and still every day is a new adventure together- or as Raj likes to put it “it’s you and me against the world now.” I can’t wait to see what life has in store for us next.
