Growing up together in Hong Kong, Nikhil and Kamali went to the same kindergarten, primary and secondary school.
“It was only after Nikhil left for university – and I was still in secondary school – that we started dating,” shares Kamali.
The duo have been together for seven years. Nikhil lives his dream as a commercial airline pilot, and Kamali is the curator for her family diamond jewellery business.
Choosing A Wedding Location
The couple agreed on the stunning Shangri-La Hotel in Bangkok for the wedding. Along the river of Chao Phraya, the view is picturesque at night. This was a perfect amalgamation of Kamali and Nikhil’s destination wedding dreams.
Kamali loved the idea of a Thailand wedding since she spent all of her holidays as a young girl with her grandmother there. Moreover, Nikhil was always keen on a city wedding.
Lovingly hash tagged as #nikamali, the festivities kickstarted with a welcome dinner.
The event flaunted a fun theme of ‘Crazy Colorful’. The venue was laden with multi colored fans, danglers, ceiling drapes, mime artists, dramatic ‘alive’ statues, a carousel and dancers floating down from above. All the color and pomp left a memorable impression on every guest. The duo even called for the Cirque De La Lune. Following the theme religiously, Nikhil paraded down the red carpet wearing from Manzar Couture, and Kamali dressed in an exquisite multi-colored gown by Suneet Varma.
With a doting ‘Petals & Paisley’ theme, the dress code was decided as ‘Floral Fantasy’.
Looking like an angel floating on clouds, Kamali donned an ornate salmon pink gown with white sequin flowers all over the skirt designed by Manish Malhotra. Nikhil wore a foral jacket and kurta by Manzar Couture, making his entry in full desi style.
The Imperial India sangeet (as it was infamously called on the day) had a rich Indian vibe with a peacock mix of colours.
All guests were dressed in magnificent gaiety with Kamali and Nikhil choosing to be colour coordinated in their deep blue ensembles. Dressed to the nines was Kamali in her bespoke Manish Malhotra blue anarkali, and Nikhil in a sherwani by Manav Gangwani with delicate golden threadwork.
The decor had some stunning life size peacock installations, with gorgeous peacock feathers at the entrance. Adding to it were colour coordinated candle jars atop dining tables. High arches with peacock feathers motifs were studded at the base with matching purple and blue blooms. A star studded event, singer Mika performed at the sangeet making it a big hit.
The wedding had a British Raj theme and was given the name ‘Palatial Promise’. The dress code for this was ‘Elegant Indian’ – and Kamali looked every inch a classy princess in her custom-made ‘Hyderabadi’ lehenga by Sabyasachi.
The gorgeous ‘booti’ work on her short-sleeved blouse paired well with the red and green ensemble which had silver and gold threadwork.
Nikhil wore a white Sabyasachi sherwani with intricate threadwork and a maroon stole which grabbed as much attention as did his regal red safa.
The mandap had beautiful garlands of red roses strung from the ceilings.
A Night of Nostalgia- the reception set a vintage tone. Dusty typewriters, artistic faded bouquets, a gramophone, retro luggage, a radio dating back to decades ago and an antique phone took the spot light. One of the highlights here was a picture perfect vintage green car.
Kamali and Nikhil made a grand entry to their reception in a polished grey vintage convertible adorned with floral bouquets. The ‘Black Tie’ formal evening shimmered with camera flashes to capture the newly wed beautiful bride.
Kamali looked regal in a custom-made pearl-white gown with beaded short sleeves by Manav Gangwani, which she paired amazingly with delicate jewellery. Nikhil donned a sharply tailored tuxedo from House of Launganis.
The stunning pearl-white seven-tier cake was a showstopper. The evening was also honored with the popular singer Kanika Kapoor serenading the gathering with her peppy numbers.
