We at Think Shaadi are over the moon to work with JADE by Monica and Karishma, to showcase their latest designs in the city of London. The event will be staged at The Collective by Kari C. on Sunday 15th May 2016 from 10:00 – 18:00. Monica Shah, will personally showcase select pieces from Tribal Princess in the Valley of Flowers and Amoha Summer 16’ collections.
This event will be the first occasion in which JADE by Monica and Karishma will be showcased in London. The story of JADE began back in October 2008, when two designers Monica and Karishma launched a brand that melded together discreet luxury with dynamic harmony. Although having a distinct classically Indian aesthetic, the designs are thoroughly international, being inspired from a variety of styles from across the globe.
We caught up with Monica and Karishma to ask them a few questions about the brand.
So, how did the brand start?
JADE was born of a fiercely creative spirit and a unique sensibility. We found our calling in fashion early. Monica discovered her innate talent and love for draping at Central Saint Martins, London while Karishma honed her skills in fashion at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, India’s premier fashion institute. Having been successfully researching and consulting for internationally acclaimed fashion labels for over a decade, we felt a yearning to chart a different course. JADE is the culmination of this yearning.
What is your design ethos?
Jade is born of the art. Taking inspiration from India’s long tradition of hand craftsmanship, Jade’s raison d’être is to make the artisanal relevant in today’s instant, industrialised world. The ability to create timeless pieces representing traditional Indian crafts and heritage in a distinct and refreshing new avatar for today’s global woman sets our creations apart.
Here, time halts its rapid stride and walks a slow walk to savour the arts and culture. The M & K couture studio is conceived to be a reflection of our very raison d’être.
What is the most important thing when a bride picks her wedding trousseau?
Putting together a wedding trousseau can be grueling for the bride, since it’s one of the important pre-wedding preparation tasks. A trousseau usually contains the bride’s most treasured belongings, and no matter how much one wants, you simply cannot carry everything you own in your wedding trousseau. Hence the most important thing when a bride picks her wedding trousseau is to pick things that are necessary and versatile. Few things that we feel the brides must carry in her trousseau are- A chic embroidered jacket, which can be worn on jeans during an outing or on a lehenga / anarkali for those post wedding family soirees. A feminine cape or a bodysuit that can be worn with a lehenga for one of the pre-wedding functions, and on your honeymoon you can smartly style them with dhoti pants, jeans or a skirt. Also never forget to pack a few pairs of heels in solid colors like black, blue & gold. These colors are very versatile and can be beautifully carried on Indian and Western attire.
What are JADE’s tips for the sister of the bride?
The bride’s sister would be around the bride most of the time during the wedding. Hence it’s important to wear something that would compliment the bride’s outfit without it being too overpowering. We enjoy designing for the bridesmaids and have a vast collection of chic young pieces which compliment the heavier pieces and are light and fun for the sister to be able to move around; as unlike the bride who will be seated in one place, the sister needs to move around amongst guests coordinating things for the bride. A flared lehenga paired with an embellished crop top and an embroidered jacket would look stunning on the bridesmaid and she will also be able to avoid the hassle of managing the dupatta while getting things done for her sister.
How excited is the brand about exhibiting in London for the first time?
We have done a few international trunk shows in the past, but this going to be our first time in London. We’re super excited and also a bit nostalgic as this the place where I (Monica) honed my skills as a fashion designer, and that makes this exhibit even more special. I personally consider London as one of the top fashion capitals of the world. The vibrancy and diversity of this city aesthetically transcends from high-street to high-fashion.
We will be showcasing our ‘ready to wear’ summer collection, and limited selection of Bridal couture at the trunk show which are all handpicked by Karishma & I. I’ll also be present at the trunk show to give my personal style tips to all those beautiful women who would be visiting us on May 15.
The up coming trunk show will surely be a magical event and we are looking forward to seeing our Think Shaadi readers on the day, make sure you save the date.
